Ok i sound stupid, but can mermaids be real?

Isnt there ANY way that a mermaid or something like it could be formed? By two different species mating? I have heard of and seen pictures of te fiji mermaids, who are like grotesque versions of what people believe mermaids would look like. They're more like half monkey half fish. So if you guys have any cool myths or stories to tell me or give me links to, I would really appreciate it! I love myths and stuff lol its a break from reality, which we all know can be ugly some times.
